Get to know the difference in our approach to counseling…in 30 minutes!
I am quite sure that many of you think that all of the counseling practices being offered in the Philippines are just the same. Pretty much about common sense advice to deal with your difficulties in the secret life you and I have in our minds. You probably hear a lot of these in talk shows and see them online in your Google searches.
I must admit that from 2009 up to 2019, my practice varied only slightly from what was and is still widely available in the Philippines, that of a syndromal and symptom-reduction approach to therapy.
Since 2019 though, I have come across an approach that I believe jumps out as the most scientifically sound that I have ever experienced applying in my own life, as well as those that I have helped in the past two years or so!
In my zeal and excitement to share this with you, I am now offering a 30-minute session that is packed with enough information for you to see how this relatively new approach in the field of counseling and psychology works so well, and why it is now the most researched method in the world for the last 20 years!
What you will be shown is what Dr. Kevin Polk calls the Psychological Flexibility Point of View, which can neatly sum up this approach to therapy in just 30 minutes!
Feel free to reach out to us and book yourself a quick 30-minute appointment that we are confident will change your life’s direction! Yes, that’s all we ask! Thirty minutes and you are free to decide if you wish to continue your work with us or not.
You can be an individual, a couple, or a family. Just take 30 minutes of your time and see if this is something that will explain best why you and I struggle within our mental worlds!
Call or message me now at 0917 886 LIFE (5433)! I’d be more than excited to share my newfound knowledge with you, so you can start your journey towards creating that best version of you that you’ve always wanted!

What is One Life Only Counseling about?
At One Life Only Counseling Services, we work with individuals, couples, and families who are dealing with concerns such as anxiety, low mood, relationship difficulties, grief, trauma-related distress, problematic habits, life transitions, and patterns that feel difficult to change.
Our approach is grounded primarily in contextual behavioral science, particularly Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT) and Integrative Behavioral Couple Therapy (IBCT).
Rather than beginning with the question:
“What disorder does this person have?”
we are more interested in asking:
“What is happening in this person’s life?”
“What is keeping this pattern going?”
“What has this behavior come to do or protect against?”
“And what might help create more workable ways of responding?”
We Look at People in Context
People do not develop problems in a vacuum.
The ways we think, feel, relate, avoid, cope, and respond are shaped over time by our histories, relationships, environments, circumstances, and the consequences of what we have learned to do.
This means that difficulties are not automatically signs that something is fundamentally wrong with you.
Often, patterns that are painful today once made sense within a particular context.
Counseling involves understanding those patterns without reducing the person to them.
You are more than a diagnosis, a test score, a symptom, or a difficult period in your life.
You are a whole person whose choices and patterns make sense in the context of your history, relationships, circumstances, and what matters to you.
Beyond Labels
Diagnoses can sometimes be useful.
They can help people describe common experiences, communicate with other professionals, access services, or identify treatment options.
But a diagnosis is not the same thing as an explanation.
Two people with the same diagnosis may have arrived there through very different histories and may need very different forms of help.
For this reason, we try not to stop at:
“What is this called?”
We also ask:
“How does this work in this particular person’s life?”
“What situations bring it out?”
“What keeps it going?”
“What changes it?”
More Than Test Scores
Psychological tests and assessments can provide useful information, but they are snapshots taken under particular conditions.
They do not capture everything a person can become.
A score cannot fully tell us how someone will respond to a different environment, a meaningful relationship, new opportunities, better support, or changing circumstances.
Assessment is therefore most useful when it helps us understand a person more clearly—not when it becomes a permanent definition of who that person is.
Counseling With a Clear Purpose
Good counseling should help you need less counseling over time.
Counseling is not intended to become an endless process of discussing the same difficulties without movement.
Our goal is to help you:
understand the patterns that keep problems going,
recognize the contexts in which those patterns become stronger or weaker,
develop more flexible and workable ways of responding,
clarify what matters to you,
strengthen your ability to make choices consistent with those values, and
gradually become less dependent on counseling as your own capacity grows.
Progress does not always mean that difficult thoughts and emotions disappear.
Often, it means becoming better able to respond to them without allowing them to determine the direction of your life.
Values Without Imposition
Counseling should not be about making you live according to your counselor’s values.
Our role is not to tell you what kind of person you are supposed to become.
Instead, we help you examine what matters to you, what your current patterns are costing you, and what kinds of choices might help you move toward a life that is more workable and meaningful within your actual circumstances.
Your culture, relationships, beliefs, responsibilities, history, and constraints all matter.
There is no single template for a good life.
Relationships and Couples Counseling
In couples work, we primarily draw from Integrative Behavioral Couple Therapy (IBCT).
Rather than simply deciding who is right or wrong, IBCT looks at the patterns that develop between partners.
Many recurring conflicts are maintained not only by what each person does, but by how each partner responds to the other over time.
Couples can become trapped in cycles of criticism, withdrawal, defensiveness, pressure, resentment, or avoidance even when both genuinely want the relationship to improve.
Counseling helps make these patterns visible so that partners can respond to each other with greater awareness, flexibility, and choice.
Medication and Other Forms of Care
Counseling does not need to compete with medicine.
Medication can be helpful for some people, and psychological support can be helpful with or without medication.
The important question is not whether one approach is universally better than another.
It is whether a particular intervention is helping a particular person under their particular circumstances.
When medical or psychiatric evaluation appears appropriate, we encourage clients to consult qualified healthcare professionals.
A Science-Informed Approach
Our approach continues to evolve as the evidence evolves.
We aim to use methods that are scientifically informed, coherent with our underlying framework, and responsive to the needs and circumstances of the person in front of us.
This does not mean mechanically applying techniques because they appear in a manual.
Techniques should have a purpose.
We want to understand what a particular intervention is intended to change, why it may be useful for this person, and whether it is actually helping.
Is One Life Only a Good Fit for You?
One Life Only may be a good fit if you are looking for counseling that is:
collaborative rather than authoritarian,
attentive to context rather than focused only on labels,
grounded in contemporary behavioral science,
interested in how problems are maintained rather than merely what they are called,
flexible enough to respond to your circumstances,
and oriented toward helping you become increasingly capable of navigating life without long-term dependence on counseling.
Choosing a counselor is ultimately a matter of fit.
Credentials, methods, and professional training matter, but so does what happens when two people actually sit down together.
Do you feel heard?
Can you speak honestly?
Can difficult things be discussed without being immediately judged or reduced to a label?
Does the work help you see your situation more clearly and respond to it more effectively?
Those questions matter too.
About One Life Only Counseling Services
One Life Only Counseling Services provides counseling for individuals, couples, and families using contemporary approaches informed by contextual behavioral science, particularly Acceptance and Commitment Therapy and Integrative Behavioral Couple Therapy.
Our aim is simple:
to help people understand what keeps them stuck, develop more workable ways of responding, and build lives that increasingly require less counseling—not more.

Twelve Years of One Life Only, Twelve Years of Trust and Hope in Our Humanity!
by Nathan Chua
As I write this post, there is trepidation about the future given the situation we find ourselves in, as we are mired in a brutal, endless pandemic, and a perpetual and rigid lockdown response; and to add to that, certain groups wanting to take advantage of the weakness of others as they occupy territories that deprive small fisher folks of their sole livelihood, while simultaneously putting the region on the precipice of war, just because one group cannot stand the independence of another; I must admit that sometimes I begin to lose hope that change for a better human race and planet can ever be attainable.
I thought maybe it would be good to write about why One Life Only exists and why we should even care about change, given the bleak nature of our current circumstances. My optimism comes from a firm belief that humans are capable of making the hard choices in the service of the greater good. Given the right circumstances, we are able to do acts that our very pragmatic, my-personal-survival-first minds cannot comprehend.
I was neither skeptical nor exuberant about finding the best means for change in my life through psychology. I took an undergraduate degree in psychology plainly for the reason that I wanted to understand why I was who I was. I then turned to several other paths that for me, ultimately proved ineffectual. I thought then that I would find the answers in my mind, and that a logical and mathematical mind would save me from my problems in living. If I could figure it out then I can see the change sooner rather than later. Maybe I needed to be smarter and more informed. But all that knowledge of how to accomplish my material and culturally-acceptable goals, actually made me even worse!
The next step in my life was to turn towards the divine. I saw how people in church seemed to have it all together as I met them in the course of my young career as a businessman. Alas, it had a ceiling. Change was for the most part, superficially based on a hope that I found something that had held life’s truths, and the most plausible explanations for my existence.
I never thought that science would have a path for me towards improving who I can become. Science seemed to have this cold calculating aura for me. Further still, I never thought that psychology would ever be a true science. I pursued the path left by Freud and existential philosophy to find the answers. I never gave behaviorism a second look. I didn’t want to associate myself with a group of people who think that humans are just as trainable as animals!
But lo and behold, I found the answers in precisely this last option. Who knows? There could be better answers out there in the future, but for now, the science of behavior has given me fresh wind. So I have come full circle to psychology, but this time not the artsy type, but the sciency type.
I must add though that throughout the course of my search for the truths of our existence, I had one thing undergirding all of my efforts. I always had that instinct that most of it had to do with love. In my twenties and thirties, I thought that I should love my business and the people who helped me build it. In my journey through religion, I said love trumps doctrine. In my study of psychology, I loved the artsy parts, but never loved science, until I found it in a lesser known approach in behavioral science called, Acceptance and Commitment Therapy, or ACT.
Here’s how the developer of ACT has framed it, or here’s how science can be an exercise in love.
“Humanity is in a race, a race to create a kinder, more flexible and values-based world–to say it another way, a more loving world…Either we will learn how to create modern minds for this modern world of ours, or we will loom ever closer to disaster.
None of us knows how it will turn out, but based on human history, I put my bet on the human community evolving to meet the challenge. I put my bet on our capacity to choose love over fear…Deep down, we all know that love isn’t everything, it’s the only thing,” Steven C. Hayes.
If there is one thing that can save the world, at the moment, it is science. And it happens to be a science of love that can ensure that the human species will continue to prosper and preserve the wonders of this planet.
Perhaps that is what truly brought me to Acceptance and Commitment Therapy. For in love, there has to be genuine acceptance and a stubborn commitment to do what our logical minds would never understand. In ACT, I think I found the science behind love, the only thing that matters, which I just found out, not just for me, but for everybody else.
Happy 12th One Life Only!
ACT for Trauma Certificate of Completion
Having been trained in psychodynamic therapy, helping trauma clients from a behavioral lens was unimaginable for me as a graduate student. With the use of the inner child, memory and exposure work, it turns out that the two approaches share much in common. From an ACT or behavioral, and scientific perspective however, I have learned the rationale behind such practices, and how our nervous system works to produce the kind of ineffective responses people have towards traumatic experiences. It was difficult having done this together with the ACT for Adolescents course, but it was well worth the effort. I consider it a privilege to be around in an era where people like Dr. Russ Harris, a best-selling author and renowned ACT therapist, are able to share their knowledge and expertise from thousands of miles away! I eagerly look forward to more courses in ACT, Relational Frame Theory, and Functional Contextualism.
ACT for Adolescents Certificate of Completion

We always strive to find the best training and approaches available to provide you with the best results possible. Nathaniel Chua recently accomplished a six-week training course with Dr. Russ Harris, a best-selling author and renowned ACT (Acceptance and Commitment Therapy) therapist. Nathan has been working with teens since 2009. This workshop has opened his eyes to the many ways ACT can be highly effective in helping teens, as well as their parents, find more effective ways of relating to one another.
